About Northumberland

Northumberland boasts two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, one of the country's first National Parks, England's largest World Heritage Site and more castles and fortified buildings than any other county in England.

Unspolit landscape

This is a landscape steeped in history with miles of unspoilt beaches, dramatic coastal paths and spectacular views. The rolling grasslands of the Cheviot Hills, the river valleys of the North, the dramatic beauty of the North Pennines and the rugged landscape of the Northumberland National Park and Hadrian's Wall Country all go to create a remarkable place to live and work.

Wizard villages

Scattered throughout the countryside and dotted along the coast, Northumberland's towns and villages are a real gem. Friendly and picturesque, this is the England you always wanted to find, with streets lined with interesting shops and events, shows and village fairs celebrating Northumberland's rich cultural heritage.

A recent survey by the Country Life magazine found that Northumberland’s Alnwick was the best place to live in the UK. Home to the Dukes of Northumberland since 1309 – the current Duke is one of the key sponsors of the Academy – Alnwick scored best on house prices, crime rates and local amenities.

The magazine also found that Alnwick was best for local character, quality of local produce, sporting and outdoor opportunities, weather and historical or cultural buildings. It also scored well on local history, being home to the famous castle which has been a backdrop to many films, including a starring role as Hogwarts Castle in the Harry Potter movies.

The town, 30 miles north of Newcastle, is also close to the exceptional countryside of Northumberland National Park and the North East coastline.
